Review: The Cheese Board Pizzeria

December 16, 2012 § Leave a comment

Last Tuesday, the 11th of December, my friends and I decided to trek over to Cheese Board Pizzeria for lunch. Cheese Board is a Berkeley staple, consisting of not only a pizzeria, but of a small coffee bar, bakery and cheese shop. Cooperatively owned, the Cheese Board Collective has set high standards for fresh food in Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto.

This pizza shop sells one type of pizza a day (always vegetarian) & one type of salad a day, and these change every day. Cheese Board sells pizza Tuesdays through Saturdays, between 11:30 to 3pm and 4:30 to 8pm.

The lines are usually ridiculously long (who blames everyone?), so plan accordingly.

The day we went to Cheese Board, the pie of the day was “Tomato sauce, Fresh asiago cheese, Mozzarella, Arugula with Lemon vinaigrette, [&] Shaved parmesan cheese.” Cheeseboard usually does not sell the “traditional” pizza with tomato sauce and cheese that most people are familiar with.

Pizzas range from “Zucchini, Red onions, French goat, Mozzarella, [&] Hazelnut pesto” to “Crimini mushroom, Roasted onions, Montalban cheese, Mozzarella, Baby spinach, Pine nuts, Garlic olive oil, [&] Parsley”, so be sure to come with an open palette ready to taste something beyond the expected.

Regardless, we were all pretty excited to try it.

A whole pie at Cheese board is $20, with half pies at $10, slices at $2.50, etc. I went with a group of 5 and we decided to get a 3/4 pie while I got my own 2 slices so I could photograph the pizza without starving teenagers getting impatient with me (sorry, guys).

The pizza was absolutely incredible.

The salty bite of the asiago and parmesan paired perfectly with the melting quality of the mozzarella. The tomato sauce had the right balance of sweetness and tang. And the acidity of the lemon vinaigrette with the peppery taste of arugula added variety and texture to the pizza. I’ve always been a fan of arugula on pizza (I’ll  save Paisan’s “Fresh basil pesto with rocket salad & grana padana” pizza for a different post).

This was hands down my favorite pizza at Cheese Board and I highly recommend anyone to go back on December 18th to get it again*.

Cheese Board’s pizza is consistently delicious with flavors that are meticulously planned. Head to Cheese Board for pizza with gourmet taste at a reasonable price and staff that are always friendly & hospitable.

*Note: Cheese Board does sometimes repeat pizzas and the fact that this pizza is being repeated on the same day of the week is completely coincidental. Pizza flavors are posted on the Cheese Board website here.
